Mondsee weddings
The Sound of Music church, and a warm lake twenty minutes from Salzburg.
Shooting in Mondsee
Mondsee gets most of its international attention from the basilica, which stood in for the wedding church in the 1965 film and still draws couples who grew up on it. The building genuinely deserves the attention: a yellow baroque facade and a tall, calm interior that photographs far better than most churches its size.
The lake itself is the warmest in the Salzkammergut and the closest to Salzburg, which makes Mondsee the practical choice as much as the romantic one.
When to come
May to June
Blossom around the lake, comfortable temperatures, and the basilica square not yet full of coach tours.
July to August
Warmest swimming in the region and the busiest period for the church. Book the basilica early.
September to October
Low sun straight onto the basilica facade in the evening. The best month for the exterior.
November to April
Very quiet. The church works year round, the lake shore is bleak but atmospheric under snow.
Spots worth the walk

Basilica St. Michael
The yellow baroque facade and the film's wedding interior. Ceremonies book well ahead, especially in summer.
The square in front of the basilica
Wide enough for a full group shot with the facade behind, and it holds evening light.
Lakeshore towards St. Lorenz
The Drachenwand cliff rising straight out of the water. Best in the morning.
Drachenwand viewpoint
A steep walk for a view down the whole lake. Worth it for a couple willing to change shoes.
Mondsee old town lanes
Small, colourful, and a useful weather fallback five minutes from the church.
Practical notes
- The basilica is an active parish church. Ceremony slots are limited on Saturdays and are not guaranteed simply because you are photographing there.
- Photography inside during a ceremony is normally permitted, but flash usually is not. Confirm with the parish office.
- Mondsee is twenty five minutes from Salzburg on the A1, which makes it the easiest lake for guests staying in the city.
- Parking near the basilica is limited in summer. Plan the dress arrival rather than improvising it.

Mondsee questions
The basilica hosts Catholic weddings, and couples of other denominations or none can usually arrange a symbolic ceremony. It is a working parish church, so the parish office decides, not the tourism board. Enquire early.
About twenty five minutes by car on the motorway, which is the shortest hop from the city to any Salzkammergut lake.
Mondsee is closer to Salzburg, warmer for swimming, and has the basilica. Wolfgangsee is more dramatic, has the Schafberg, and holds better evening light. Most of the decision comes down to whether the church matters to you.
